Artifact of the Month
In times of conflict, Soldiers will often resort to unofficial pieces of equipment to enhance unit operations. An area of concern for many units is communication within the unit. Will the unit be able to communicate effectively in times of crisis?
1st Lieutenant James McCormick deployed to Iraq with the 1487 th Transportation Company, Ohio National Guard, before being transferred to the 518 th Gun Truck Company (Provisional) where he served as Executive Officer. The mission of the 518 th was to escort military convoys and protect them from enemy ambush. In order to enhance the speed at which his unit could communicate during operations, Lt. McCormick privately purchased civilian model handheld radios, of which this item was one. The civilian radios would only be used as a communications device within the convoy on the road.
