Artifact of the Month

Chest of Drawers

This week we commemorate soldier ingenuity. It is said that soldiers are on the ground in a foreign country about five minutes before thinking about how to make their lives as comfortable as possible while they are there. The Army may provide soldiers with a lot of things, but they can’t provide them with everything. Soldiers like having little reminders of the life they lived back home.

Captain Larry Houck, of the 1128th Transportation Company, Alabama National Guard, wanted a chest of drawers that he could use to store his clothing in. So, using some scavenged wood, MRE boxes, and a little duct tape, he created this example of soldier ingenuity which he used during his time in Saudi Arabia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
