About JBLE Transportation School

The U.S. Army Transportation School is headquartered at Fort Lee, VA where it operates as a geographically distributed One Army School System (OASS) comprised of three (3) separate training locations for all the Transportation Corps MOSs. The Transportation School at Joint-Base Langley-Eustis, VA is led by the 58th Transportation Battalion and the Maritime and Intermodal Training Department (MITD) where it trains six (6) Transportation MOSs: 88H Cargo Specialist, 88K Watercraft Operator, 88L Watercraft Engineer, 88U Railway Operations Specialist, 880A Marine Deck Officer, and 881A Marine Engineer Officer

88H Cargo Specialist

The Cargo Specialist leads, directs, or performs duties to move cargo to, from, and between all modes of transport. The cargo specialist must be proficient in all methods of cargo handling and storage procedures (manual or mechanical). Trained at Fort Eustis, VA as part of the Transportation School’s distributed One Army School System.

88K Watercraft Operator

The Watercraft Operator leads, operates, and performs seamanship duties on Army watercraft. The Watercraft Operator must be competent in the use of electronic navigation equipment (e.g., sonar and radar), navigational aids, radios, and single-letter international code flags; proficient at docking/undocking vessels and loading/unloading vessels. Trained at Fort Eustis, VA as part of the Transportation School’s distributed One Army School System.

88L Watercraft Engineer

The Watercraft Engineer leads, performs, and trains subordinate personnel to operate and maintain the vessel’s engines and power plant. In addition to the engines, duties include electrical and cooling systems; lubrication fuel systems; refrigeration; steering mechanisms; pneumatic and hydraulic systems; the hull; piping and general vessel maintenance. Trained at Fort Eustis, VA as part of the Transportation School’s distributed One Army School System.

88U Railway Operations Specialist (USAR only)

The Railway Specialist provides rail network capability and infrastructure assessments. Performs and assists with rail planning, coordinates the use of host nation or contracted rail assets, and performs Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) duties to oversee contracts. Trained at Fort Eustis, VA as part of the Transportation School’s distributed One Army School System.

880A Marine Deck Officer

Commands Army vessels (Class A1 and A2) operating on lakes, bays, rivers, sounds, coastal, and open ocean waters. Responsible for proper maintenance and operation of vessels and vessel systems, to include (but not limited to): weather and oceanographic analysis and planning, navigation, route planning, communications, safety, pollution prevent and abatement, risk assessment, amphibious operations, Joint Maritime operations, crew leadership, training, vessel readiness, force protection & weapon systems, medical preparedness & vessel sanitation, helicopter & airborne operations, seaworthiness, firefighting, and ships business. Trained at Fort Eustis, VA as part of the Transportation School’s distributed One Army School System.

881A Marine Engineer Officer

Responsible for the efficient and economical operation of the engine room machinery, auxiliary machinery, and specific deck equipment. Supervises and performs installation and repair of marine power plants, propulsion systems, heating and ventilation systems, and other mechanical plumbing and electrical equipment in ships and marine facilities. Trained at Fort Eustis, VA as part of the Transportation School’s distributed One Army School System.

510th Transportation Training Detachment

Mission

Execute Transportation Corps Officer, Warrant Officer, and Enlisted personnel development actions to support the eight life-cycle management functions. Coordinate personnel management policies and force structure actions for the total Transportation Force across Doctrine, Organization, Training, Material, Leadership, Personnel, Facilities, and Policy (DOTMLPF-P).

Echo Company, 58th Transportation Battalion

Mission

Ensures the Reserve Component (USAR and ARNG) perspectives are fully integrated in the development of emerging doctrine, leader development, and force structure impacting the manning, equipping, training, readiness, and deploy-ability of Reserve Component Transportation Units and Soldiers. Provides the Chief of Transportation timely and accurate perspectives on personnel, equipment, training, and deployment issues that pertain to the Reserve Component Transportation Community.

489th Transportation Training Detachment

Mission

Oversees and Coordinates training, administrative, and logistical support across all Transportation School locations. Consists of two offices: Principal Office at Fort Lee, VA and a cell at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA, supporting the Maritime and Intermodal Training Department (MITD)
